Am Hof

In Vienna, you can visit Am Hof if you want to see tons of ancient sights. The Am Hof Square is actually considered as one of the oldest in Vienna. This is where the castle of the Babenberg family, built during the middle Ages, can be seen. The grandiose residence became a host for famous personalities such as Barbarossa as well as Walter von der Vogelweide. The latter luminary is a star in the infamous Wagner’s Tannhauser.

At the center of the square, one can find the Column of Our Lady. This baroque masterpiece was created during the mid-1600. The Column of Our Lady marks the victory of the Catholics over the Protestants from Sweden. The war lasted for thirty years starting from 1618 until 1648.

At the square’s northwest corner, the Civic Armory is located. This was used as a fire station in 1685. In 1731, the façade of the Civic Armory along with the Hadsburg eagle was changed into a baroque-style establishment. Today, the Civic Armory is currently the headquarters of the fire department in Vienna. Aside from the headquarters, there is also a firefighting museum. Tourists and local visitors can enter the museum only during Sunday mornings.

Every corner of the Am Hof Square is certainly has a sight to see. At the eastern side of Am Hof, visitors can see the popular Kirche Am Hof. Walk a few blocks from the Kirche Am Hof so that you can reach the Engel Apotheke. This is a pharmacy that has a Jugendstil mosaic of a woman that collects their so-called Elixir of Life.
